What is the Ajrakh print? What are Ajrakh Sarees?
Ajrakh Print
The infamous western borders of India consist of the largest district in the country- Kutch. Encompassing over 939 villages, Kutch has always been a nurturing home for art and crafts to flourish. From one such village in Kutch called Ajrakhpur, comes the old semiotic art form of Ajrakh. According to local artisans, it means “keep it today”- referring to the patience and concentration required for the 16 crucial step manufacturing process of Ajrakh textiles. Drawing in from Ajrakhpur’s Arabic history, Azrakh- the Arabic word for Indigo reflects the natural colors that were used in these textiles before the tragic earthquake of 1956 which swept away most of the Indigo plant in the district.
Art has always been used to create a tangible component of history. Ajrakhi printing blocks draw inspiration from the Islamic architectural arches and jali windows. Each block has an intricately sculpted motif that narrates the rich culture of Kutch. The pastel hues and dark tones of blue are the original shades that were used in this art form. Due to water depletion and the introduction of synthetic fabrics and dyes, Ajrakh is slowly losing its culturally significant beauty.
Local markets in every city are flooded with machine printed and synthetically dyed textiles similar to Ajrakh. However, the true elegance of Ajrakh textiles can be determined by the type of fabric and dye being used. Authentic textiles are always printed on natural fabrics to radiate the intricacy of its blocks. As the art was originally developed using natural dyes, it is only natural plant dyes that bring out the magic from Ajrakh printing blocks.
